MicHoldings, Inc. and Autism

AUTISM

At MicHoldings, Inc. we pride ourselves in training our staff to fully understand the people that we serve. MicHoldings, Inc. partnered with Pamela Lemerand, Ph. D, from the Autism Collaborative Center at Eastern Michigan University to hold Autism Spectrum Disorders training for our caregivers. The Center hosted three workshops to help our caregivers better understand how to work with persons with autism. Here is a breakdown of each workshop and what each one focused on.

Workshop #1: Autism Spectrum Disorders: Key features of social, communication, and behavior impairments; strengths and challenges of autism; fundamental principles for communication, teaching, and behavior management with persons with ASD; impairment and ASD.

Workshop #2: Assessment of persons with ASD: Principles of assessing the person, the environment and the occupations/activity, understanding that behavior is communication and serves a specific function; how to understand what the behavior is telling you; how to chart behavior concerns, how to measure changes in behavior.

Workshop #3: Intervention approaches and specific strategies: Interventions at the environment level, person level, occupation/activity level; positive behavior supports; the challenges of transition times; behavior challenges outside the home; non-compliance de-escalation.

MicHoldings, Inc. understands the critical role that our caregivers play in supporting persons with autism. We understand that autism is a lifelong neurological disorder that impacts behavior, socialization, and communication skills, and we can help those manage their world through the use of visual supports such as checklists, pictures, objects, technology, and other interventions. Our goal at MicHoldings, Inc. is to give those persons with autism the possibility of living, working, and integrating into the community by figuring out why they are displaying the behavior and how we can assist them in changing the inappropriate behavior to more acceptable and appropriate one.

MicHoldings, Inc. and Gentle Teachings
  GENTLE TEACHINGS

“Gentle Teaching is based on a psychology of human interdependence. It asks caregivers to look at themselves and their spirit of gentleness to find ways to express warmth and unconditional love toward those who are the most disenfranchised from family and community life. It views our role as critical and requires a deep commitment to personal and social change. It starts with ourselves, our warmth toward others, our willingness to give without any expectation of receiving anything in return, and our intense desire to form feelings of companionship and community with those who are the most pushed to the very edge of society.

Gentle Teaching focuses on four essential feelings that need to be taught to those who are served— safe, loved, loving, and engaged. Caregivers not only need to ensure that those whom they serve are safe, but, more importantly, feel safe”

Excerpt from Center for Positive Living Supports

MicHoldings, Inc. is fully committed to the Gentle Teachings philosophy. We are taking this philosophy across the board, from our CEO to supervisors, to home managers and all our caregivers. We understand that the main idea behind Gentle Teachings is not to change behaviors, but to change ourselves and deepen our spirit of gentleness. We believe that long-term change comes and is sustained when we change ourselves first in order to convey warmth and a sense of love to those we care for. MicHoldings, Inc. staff partnered with Center for Positive Living Supports for the following trainings for our caregivers:

Working with People

This two day training is designed for direct care-givers and first line supervisors. It teaches the basics of providing positive supports and the important role of a gentle caregiver. This training is also a good introduction for managers, support coordinators, clinical staff and those identified as training leaders.  It is a building block for providers to conduct their own internal training.  Attendance at both days is required to receive training certificate.

Gentle Teacher Practicum

This three day training is a combination of classroom and hands-on training in the “spirit of gentleness”.  It is most suited for first line supervisors, managers, support coordinators, clinical staff, and those identified by their agency as having a leadership role in training development. It is limited to 12 – 14 participants because of the intimate setting and design. This training is essential for those looking to become certified mentors or trainers in their own organizations.  The Working with People training is a prerequisite for this training.

How has our approach impacted our consumers and our community?

In addition to helping shut down the last remaining institution for developmentally disabled individuals, MicHoldings, Inc., is responsible for taking out DD clients from the state hospital, many of which were considered too dangerous to be out in the community. MicHoldings, Inc. not only has success with these individuals but also insures full community integration and a fulfilled life to the best of their capabilities.
